  • There’s a print shop in my area that I used the last time I made business cards, and they do same day orders (in reasonable quantities). You can ask for pretty much anything and they’ll do it.

There’s really no reason to get an inkjet IMO. We have a small, portable photo printer for family gatherings (it’s fun to make small batch prints as a keepsake), but other than that, we only have a laser printer and order everything else.

  • None of this is specific to cryptocurrencies or even money, people do this with stocks (esp penny stocks), precious metals (look at all those “Buy Gold!!” videos), and collectibles (I still remember the beanie baby craze of the late 90s).

This is just gambling, betting that you’ll cash out before everyone else, but after the price has run up.

But that’s not “how all cryptocurrency works.” Yes, cryptocurrencies are valued based on supply and demand, but many aren’t actively speculated on and are used more as a currency. For example, Monero isn’t attractive for speculation because mining is unprofitable and exchanging with fiat is banned or difficult in many areas. It’s great as a currency though because transaction fees are low, transactions are fast, and it has a bunch of privacy features. Bitcoin is more attractive, but not as much for gambling because volumes are too high to get crazy spikes. So you end up with longer ye term speculation in Bitcoin like you’d see with individual large cap stocks. Bitcoin isn’t going to 10x overnight, but it’s also not going to drop 90% overnight either.

Like anything else, pick carefully, and ideally don’t gamble.

  • I don’t see it as a bright side, but I also think it should be unbanned. Don’t get me wrong, I think TikTok is cancer and nobody should use it, but I also don’t think the government should decide what propaganda I get to consume.

The government should absolutely do a public campaign against it and keep a close eye on it, but don’t ban it.

In the meantime, we should look into passing laws to solve the underlying problems, which would impact Meta and other big social media orgs as well. Or maybe fund independent social media alternatives that are FOSS.

But don’t ban speech. Banning TikTok feels a little too close to banning books…

  • I really don’t think China is nearly as interested in siphoning data as controlling the algorithm. Getting people to see more pro-Chinese videos, more anti-US videos, and some bias toward candidates they want to see win is completely doable without exfiltrating any data.

Basically, all the stuff people are pissed about Musk doing to Twitter (changing algo to push right wing content) are just as feasible for TikTok to do, with the main difference being China is a state actor, whereas Musk is a private billionaire.

We should be very worried about any social media app that’s very popular and controlled by an org with political motivations.
