I don’t see how this supports your point then. If “setting up proxy” means “packaging it to run on thousands user machines” then isn’t there obvious and huge potential for a disastrous fuckup?

Setting up proxy is not engineering.

Ente is as close as you can get to Google Photos with E2EE right now. I recently migrated there. The migration wasn’t painless and involved some scripting to handle albums and duplicates but the service itself is really good. Can recommend!

I really hope this happens. NFC payments are the only thing that keeps me from switching to GrapheneOS. Seeing how the situation with big tech unfolds, it’s not impossible that I will decide to give up this convenience though.

I’ve been playing with NixOS in spare time for a few weeks now and I’m afraid I don’t have a very good news for you. It looks like the learning curve is just very steep. It took me quite a lot of time to get to the point where I have any idea what I’m doing. Some beginner friendly resources which helped me:

• Vimjoyer videos on YT,

• LibrePheonix videos on YT,

• Misterio77 Nix starter configs and his own config.

In general, I recommend checking out people’s configs on GitHub. You can learn a lot by example.

I’m well aware of what Vivaldi can do but I refuse to support Chromium’s monopoly. In fact, it’s the only reason why I use FF.

Well, can’t say I’m surprised. I had something like that in pretty much every school I was in, just that ours were actually Gmail accounts. For non-technical folks it’s an easy and obvious solution. And to be honest, it works…

I was sure I’m getting baited when I clicked the link but it’s one of the rare cases when it actually turned out not to be a clickbait.

This feature literally found and isolated “important files” and now they are deleting those files. Just because it was never available in the US doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant.

Yeah, so basically Google invented a feature that finds your important files and deletes them. The future is here!

Of course I’m exaggerating for humoristic effect but in all seriousness I think the whole action is extremely poorly executed. I would be surprised if there weren’t some cases of people actually losing something important because of this.

Wait, so Google just moved around important users’ files on their devices without being asked to do so. And now they decided to just delete those files together with the feature? This sounds pretty crazy, even for Google.

We need to remember that there are people making unimaginable amounts of money every time we believe some AI is good enough to replace half of the human workforce.

I’m not sure about the exact percentage but I don’t think it’s necessarily that far off. I spend a lot of time reviewing code, designing, documenting, reading documentation. Actually writing code is a cherry on top.

I heard this opinion many times and I couldn’t disagree more. I hated school and I much prefer my adult, working life. In fact I feel like my life only gets better as time goes by.

Granted, I’m privileged to have a well paying job I actually enjoy, which probably makes a world of a difference.

I’m in the exact same boat. I would really like to use Vivaldi. I’m a sucker for feature rich applications (that a lot of people would call bloated). But I think that giving Google more power by using Chromium is just wrong. And I’m not even the paranoid type, I still use some Google services.

I see. For me it’s mostly programming stuff. As long as the issue in question isn’t very obscure then DuckDuckGo is doing fine. However, if it’s mentioned in a single 5 year old GitHub issue then Google is pretty much the only chance to find it in my experience.

I’m seeing comments like this all the time and I’m always baffled. I’m using DuckDuckGo as a main search engine but I have to fall back to Google quite often because DuckDuckGo is just worse for me. And any other search engine I tried was even worse that that. It’s true that Google results don’t feel as accurate as they used to, but I genuinely haven’t found better alternatives. What do you recommend?
