no, been a freebie user since Google Readers died and honestly, for the way I use it, to pop on and scroll through the feed then clicking on some articles? I’ve never felt limited or like I needed to pay to do anything.

RSS is great for following blogs and sites of specific interests, like local sites, or sites about specific subjects. You get ALL the updates. For example. I live in Baltimore and have a bunch of local sites in my RSS reader.

Reddit/Lemmy, on the other hand, is a more democratically human curated and upvoted aggregator so while it hits all the popular stuff beyond the topics you follow on RSS, it will miss a lot too.

So I use both.

Feedly for hundreds of sites of interest. And Reddit and now Lemmy for the rest.

Anyway, I think the biggest complaint is really about what the site was, what it was for, and now what he’s done to the site to destroy all of that. It’s not the first time something with a lot of users, readers, fans, etc absolutely hated when a new direction or ownership of a company ruined everything they loved about the company.

People have spent YEARS of their lives on that site. It wasn’t my main jam, easy to delete for me, but it was a source of news and what’s happening right now. But for some people, especially those with a following, it was their main voice and this dumb billionaire manbaby is just destroying it.

While I doubt I could get my friends and family on yet ANOTHER messaging app in the year of our lord 2023.

Siri, while not great, handles timers, reminders, and dumbshit like that just fine without typing. I have yet to find another good use for these assistants.

Spam’s been a HUGE Instagram problem for years that Meta just didn’t want to deal with. Every post gets littered with spam comments immediately from bots. All those bot accounts probably hopped over to Threads to keep on keeping on.

I’m on Instagram and have a bunch of followers, around 200K.

SO - My plan is to squat as the IG users pick up Threads. Most people will just follow the same people from IG (Meta encourages it and it fills your feed fast).

My follower count on Threads should grow just from that alone, right?

THEN - Facebook finally federates, right?

THEN! Facebook allows for account migration to Mastodon.

First… I migrate my @renwillis@mstdn.social account to Threads.

Finally… Immediately migrate all my followers from Threads back to mstdn.social.

Suddenly potentially 200K are following a Mastodon account!!! MWUH-HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!

I’m still on IG so I’ll have an account by default I guess. I may take a peek to see how they implemented it, but it’s hard to imagine staying.
