Haha, that’s right. Immediate noticed that.

I think younger people in Canada only know °F if their thermostat is set to it and they can’t or don’t bother to change. My stupid fridge is in Fahrenheit and that can’t be changed (even though the handbook shows the display in Celsius! A variation of the model is probably sold abroad).
I think Canada properly adopted Celsius, kilometres, litres and millilitres (at least here in Toronto), but all other metric units are the underdog. Even CBC, that is probably the only media outlet that tries to stick to metric will specify people’s height in feet and inches. Shameful.
You can’t successfully use a home email server.
Mostly true (server can be home but using the ISP network directly probably won’t work)
You can’t successfully use an email server on a (cloud) VPS.
Bullshit
You can’t successfully use an email server on a bare metal machine in your own datacenter.
Bullshit
As such, it is my distinct displeasure to declare the death of SMTP. The protocol is no longer usable. And as we can see, this devolution occurred organically.
Bullshit
I wonder if the process is open source or we just take their word that it’s privacy preserving. Anyway, privacy is not the only problem with online advertising, so I’m not going to give up adblocking any time soon.
Also note that if it’s just for personal use, you don’t have to have a domain for HTTPS. You can self sign, or create your own certificate authority, you just need to clients to trust it. But domains can be cheap or even free, so it’s better to get one so you don’t have to specially configure your devices.
I also always start with “crane” 😁
Egyptian hieroglyphs used to be painted, what we see now is usually (but not always) completely faded.
Is it actually running snap or just unpacking its content and running it as a normal flatpak?
Borg for backup. I’m really surprised it’s not more widely known. It’s an incredible piece of software.
Also, not really lesser known software, but a lesser known feature of file systems including the ones we use in FOSS operating systems: extended file attributes - useful to add metadata to files without modifying them.
+1 for Whisper. Also, I use Piper for the reverse (text-to-speech).
“tell me you fucked your sister without telling me you fucked your sister” - “I can relate to Túrin Turambar”
Not sure it satisfies your requirements but I’m quite happy with Baïkal.
Borg is great.
This was just an outline of what you could do in the scenario, not a full solution. Looking up the keywords, “Apptainer” (+sandbox), “.sif”, and “AppImage” should give you a starting point, and any specific questions can be answered separately. You are right that people could be jerks to beginners but this is rarely the intent. Not all discourse about Linux has to be at a beginner level, and packaging legacy software is not really a beginner topic.
Funny but not so accurate. We don’t actually know when Legolas was born, we don’t know that the mithril coat was actually forged in Erebor (it could certainly have been brought during the resettlement from the Grey Mountains), and we don’t know what “some young elf-prince long ago” actually means and that none was born since the fouding of Erebor (I don’t think we have an exhaustive list of noble elves from the text).
Pull a docker image of an old distro into an apptainer sandbox, install what you need within, then make a .sif
image, should work pretty much in perpetuity. You can also try to make an Appimage.
Abrechnung is really good and actively developed and improving. The UI is already pretty satisfactory, and there’s also an API which is needed if for example you want to bulk-import a spreadsheet, for now you have to code it a bit.
The balrog was already awake, but maybe wasn’t paying attention 😜
