I honestly only know how to ‘block all javascript’ on uBlock. Selective blocking is less intuitive if available.

NoScript makes it easy, as does uMatrix, to selectively block/allow third party domains. uBlock is great, but I’ve always found fine-tuned features on it less intuitive.

  • My first reaction is yeah, you don’t just plug into random Ethernet.

The wi-fi is likely a visitor network setup for guests to the library. That ethernet port could provide access to their private intranet, and be a security risk to the library. Worst case scenario, it could result in malware, ransomware, and/or millions of dollars in expenses to recover (on a library budget, that could mean permanently shutting down the library even).

After reading your post, I would say, no harm intended, just don’t do it again.

After reading your comments about intentionally being vague about ‘plugging in’ to lead the librarian to think you were asking to plug in a power cord, and not specifically meaning ethernet connection… yeah, you’re clearly in the wrong. Just be up front; if they say no, so be it. They may be able to direct you to a visitor ethernet plug-in, or maybe not. If this were an AITA thread, i’d say yes, YTA in this case.

Asking in an security community… I would assume some level of technical awareness, and you are likely well aware of network segmentation, and that no IT department would be happy about a guest plugging their laptop into random rj-45 jacks around the building. Maybe it’s not well designed, and that actually has access to firewall administration?

  • Wasn’t there a video a while back of a presentation that OOP was created as a joke or something, and the person was surprised people were taking it seriously. Might have been advertised as the creator or OOP.

I took the video as a joke anyways, not a serious thing, but who knows. I don’t even remember if it was OOP, or some other paradigm, or language, or who knows what else.

If anyone could find/link to it, I’d love to watch it again, but I’m having no luck; so my memory may be faulty.

  • I know nothing about it. I know there are a group of extensions people generally use, and I feel like I’ve heard that name.

I stick with what I know and trust reputation wise. uBlock Origin is known and trusted far and wide, and any technical community should have at least heard of it.

NoScript back in the day was pretty well known, but I don’t think it is so well known now days; in large part because until you configure it for each site you visit, it makes every site unusable… the number of websites that don’t make use of javascript for some critical site functionality are almost 0 nowdays. It just cannot be recommended to any non-technical user; they might figure it out, but it is so frustrating for every site you visit to require configuration.

  • I haven’t used noscript in a long time, but it is the only way I feel truly safe on the internet.

That said, I would never recommend it to the average non-technical user.

Average user, I would direct to uBlock Origin (make sure it is Origin, from gorhill or raymond hill, preferably from the extensions shop for your browser with lots of ratings).

For anyone inbetween uBlock Origin and noscript in techinical skill, I would recommend uBlock Origin + uMatrix (from the same developer). Has a small learning curve, but provides decent protection from 3rd party sites.

If you want protection from first party sites though… noscript all the way.

  • Thanks for the recommendation.

I believe it adds some features above Firefox’s defaults, but for anyone reading that doesn’t know, Firefox does have a feature

“Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed.” under “Privacy and Security” in settings -> under the “Cookies and Site Data” sub-section.

They also have a “Manage Exceptions” button to build a whitelist and blocklist of websites to always allow cookies and site data, or always block cookies and site data.

For those looking for more extreme add-ons are a great idea, but always prefer built-ins when available/sufficient.

I’m fine with just using Private browsing in my case. My wife knows I look at porn, but I don’t want it to be in her face if she ever uses my computer.

Nothing of the sort on your behalf. I learned something, just it seems so dumb that before the Spread Firefox campaign in the early 2000’s, they put so much thought into such an abbreviation. It must have been an internal thing, that the regular populace never really adopted.

Speaking of… apparently the Spread Firefox campaign was often abbreviated SFX… makes sense based on the context provided from your post, but I would never in a million years associate SFX with that… I’d think “Sound Effects” or something.
