  • Google is an advertising company. Their goal is to maximize profit from advertising. Avoiding government regulation is part of that goal. By imposing “good enough” self-regulation they hope keep governments from stepping in. Their solution is definitely better than the currently dying 3rd party cookie free-for-all.

Mozilla is right to question whether “targeted” ads are a good idea at all. I personally find it easier to ignore non-targeted ads, myself. But, if Mozilla decides not to cooperate & holds out for the Platonic ideal tech, they may cause ad dependent web sites to block Firefox completely. That would not be good for any of us.

  • I still use Tomboy Notes synced with Nextcloud & Dropbox. It’s ancient, but I’ve never come across anything else that does these things:

    • temporary sticky notes.
    • permanent sticky notes.
    • glorified clipboard buffer.
    • personal wiki.
    • light weight (no browser, database, or network required).
    • one small window per note.
    • optional categorization into notebooks.
    • desktop pkeyboard shortcut for searching notes or opening new ones.

I really hate web based notes. I want small quick responsive windows beside my browser.

  • I installed ubuntu on my workstation in 2013 and have upgraded the OS since. I’ve swapped out the motherboard and added 5 drives in raid6. The thing morphed from a desktop into a server over the years. The only original HW is the case (power supply died a few years ago). I never really concidered wiping & installing a new OS.
