Oh, sure. I get that. Sending yourself reminders is absolutely understandable. Sending yourself documented evidence of your plans to defraud someone is entirely different.

lol - what abuse? He said these things in an earnings presentation, probably to board and investors.

All I’m saying is that the headline itself smacks of outrage reporting, and there’s no more substance in the article itself to add context to what he said, and how. So, I choose to engage a little critical thinking and consider that he might have been responding to a investor question along the lines of, “This is a mining company - why the fuck are you spending money on a restaurant and childcare centre?”.

And I don’t see any evidence anywhere that his people are enduring shit jobs. Their building has a restaurant, a gym and a childcare centre. Putting aside his choice of words, it sounds like he’s investing heavily in trying to alleviate employee pain points, so he gets the best out of them. I’m not seeing anything anywhere where he’s forcing people to work long hours, or for shit pay, or under any number of other shitty circumstances.

Like I said: outrage reporting.

As the one calling the shots, he’s entitled to run the business that way.

As employees in a free society, his people are free to leave if they don’t like it.

If he turns out to be wrong and the arse falls out of the company as a result, the board will hold him accountable.

No one is forced to do anything here. Everyone is able to make decisions that change their outcomes.

Honestly, this headline is outrage reporting at its finest.

It sounds to me like this guy was simply paraphrasing (in an earnings call) his desire to encourage people to stay in the office for a more complete day. He’s backing that up by alleviating a lot of the reasons for people to spend time away from the office: restaurant, gym, and even a childcare centre with doctors and nurses.

It’s not like he’s locking the doors until 5pm each day.

Fucking hell. Where’s the incentive for responsible disclosure, if that’s the sort of (non) response you get?

The casting bit is the missing piece for me.

I’ve built a RasPi with Kodi for our caravan, to use Plex and stream our free-to-air TV here in Australia (using Musk’s space innernets). I just miss being able to cast from my phone, for the occasional thing I can’t do with a Kodi add-on.

Well, at least where I live, phones are banned in schools. So that’s a good start.

This is odd advice, when you consider many kids in the same age group probably have access to (or own) a tablet device of some sort. The only difference with a smartphone is the ability to call and text, and portability while staying connected (assuming many tablets aren’t 4G/5G capable).

RAID5 and unlimited downloads on my 1Gbps fibre. All I backup is my library metadata itself, using a 2N+C strategy.

DCs do indirectly create/support a lot of jobs, though. Construction is an obvious one, but even running a DC requires lots of additional people that often aren’t employed by the DC owner/operator.

I can absolutely attest to the fact that it takes even less than 20 directly-employed people to run an entire DC, including the racks of gear within it. But there are quite literally dozens and dozens more contractors and vendors involved in maintaining the facility and the equipment within them:

• Physical security
• Fire systems
• Building controls
• Electrical
  • HV and LV can often be separate sets of skills/contractors
• Refrigeration
• Mechanical
  • Critical mechanical - generators, etc
  • Regular mechanical - electric gates,etc
• Plumbing and gasfitting
• Water experts (cooling towers, etc)
• Building maintenance contractors
• Gardeners

And the list goes on. My point is that DCs can absolutely be a significant driver of employment and economic activity, just not all directly.
