Yep. During my very short (6 mos) stint as a tech support rep for Dell, I’ve learned to assume your customer is an idiot. Even when they’re using techie terms or jargon (and at times more so). Never assume other things besides that or you’ll probably regret it.
You have to be very clear and precise. A single misunderstanding can take a simple problem a lot of time to get fixed.
I think it’s DDG. I forget exactly, but i think I’ve read somewhere DGG has ties to Bing. Idk the specifics.
As for Brave, yeah. I agree. It’s good to be wary. Unfortunately, not a lot of chromium-based alternatives. Linux has ungoogled chromium but security isn’t that great either. It sucks, tbh.
One risk of the fediverse is that data is cached locally from federated servers. That could put server owners in legal jeopardy for hosting illegal content.
This 100%. And not just piracy-related stuff.
Tbh, there have been some decisions by lemmy.world admins that i didn’t really support, but this one is understandable imo.
I wonder if the lemmy devs are aware of this and what steps can be taken to protect the instance owners from stuff in other instances that can get them in trouble.
Yo momma’s so dumb she stayed in reddit.
Man, Madison’s tweets took this to a whole new level. I haven’t watched the video yet so idk how bad it is considering the new info, but maybe they haven’t seen the tweets yet? Or another miscommunication happened (like it seemed to have happened many times in the past lol).
I would rather implement a way to export/import account data.
This is perfectly reasonable. I think a lot of users will be happy with this. Also, I agree with the view that lemmy isn’t focused on individual users. We have X, Mastodon, etc. for that. Thanks for the response!
I see Empress is still subtle and classy as always.
First of all, I’d like to say thank you and that I appreciate your work. Lemmy is great and I’ve found a new home (at least for the foreseeable future). I first joined lemmy.ml once I learned about lemmy, and I have to say I had a good experience there. You guys even responded directly to my noob questions, and I honestly felt welcome which helped me decide to stay.
My questions are about account migration. As you may have already seen, I’m not with lemmy.ml anymore. The reason is I saw you guys stickied a post encouraging users to use different instances (since the server was having trouble with the influx of redditors at that time). I figured I’d help by first moving to a smaller instance. I have no regrets, although switching was a bit tricky since I had to start from scratch.
What are your thoughts on account migration? Is it in the works or is it something that’s a little far into the future? No pressure since I know you guys are busy with other stuff.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I probably won’t add the blackmail stuff. I’m still thinking how to go about it, tbh. Last time I brought it up was when they were thinking of switching due to cost and I mentioned the privacy issues. I think Zoom recording meetings would at least give them pause (I hope), but I still need to make it as believable as possible and give an alternative that’s already widely used (for customers and clients).
I’m in Asia. Idk how our company is going to handle this (or if they care) but we do have a meeting this week so I may mention it again (if I get a chance to).
Not to mention saying “just stop using Zoom” is pretty dumb if your company insists on using it. I’ve lobbied for other apps to be used with my company but they didn’t budge mainly because we’ll have to convince ALL our customers and clients to use whatever service we use as well.
I should just tell our CEO then that I refuse to use Zoom and fail to show to any and all meetings as well as tasks which require Zoom? That’s it then. Privacy is saved.
15:00 CEST. That’s the time they’ll start answering questions, i think. It’s already Monday where I am lol.
You’re absolutely right, now that I think about it. My bad. But yeah, it makes more sense to upstream and make the features toggle-able.
Not all instance owners may want all those features implemented. Not the same but kind of like how Beehaw doesn’t allow downvotes while other lemmy instances do.
True. That’s Reddit’s goal though, not the protestors’. I think they’d rather the protestors leave, tbh.
I did go back for r/place, but I haven’t touched reddit since. For me, the goal was/is to find a decent alternative so I won’t have to put up with reddit. I found it so that’s a win for me. Although I’m not gonna lie and say i may still visit for some info that I won’t be able to find someplace else (reddit has acquired tons of useful information over the years, unfortunately).
Yeah. Idk why some people think the goal was to kill reddit.
Oh definitely. The bots there are a major problem, and reddit has absolutely no plans of anything anything about them. Probably one of the big reasons why discussions on lemmy/kbin feel different.
In puberty? Hannah Montana Linux.
Kim Jong Un is god? Red Star OS. There’s a Linux distro for everyone.
