Look at the strangler pattern in microswrvice architecture. Applying this to your scenario, set up a front end to YouTube, cache the results locally (probably host in a place that allows it). Also host videos from other platforms like peertube. Once you have a lot of users, slowly prioritize “free” videos over YT content.

It’s not likely to happen, but it’s the pattern that FB uses to present news. First they showed a link to the story and you’d click through, then they required more of the story, then when all were hooked, they demanded the whole story to be displayed, effectively stealing all the users and the ability to advertise.

I had one from Sony a long time ago. It even had a cable you could attach between two of 'em (600 CDs!) so that it could seamlessly start playing another track while loading the next song. I dropped it during a move and the next time I opened the door, it spit gears at me. I had intended to fix it some day, but started watching Hoarders and decided it wasn’t worth it.

You’re 100% correct on the tactile difference in the buttons. I didn’t think of that. A similar complaint is every feature is a “button” on the infotainment screen. I saw this on a Dodge. My current car has no touchscreen and I have driven it long enough to just know where all the buttons are without looking. In my opinion, distracted driving should include these types of things that take your attention off of the road.

Push button transmission? It’s been done before.

Of course back then distracted driving was digging through the box of 8 track cassettes.

I’m just speculating here, but I’ve seen where app developers pull in a framework for a feature and it comes with all sorts of hidden gems since the framework was developed by a large corporation. The small development team now needs to consider writing their own framework (an established anti-pattern), find another (that may have the same problems or be less mature, etc) or include the privacy invading code and plan to replace it in a future release (which never happens because users want new features and the privacy concerned users have left).

Any device that requires an app to function is an immediate deal breaker for me. Same for most things that require “the cloud” to work. Garage door openers, doorbell or other cameras, cooking appliances, door locks, cars, even a basic pedometer to name a few. All of these things will only work temporarily until the company decides it’s end of life for any reason.

I would love to give this a try. Did you follow any guides? Which Pi?

While your statement is true, I install Firefox on any computer I support (family & friends) because I understand it better, can talk them through stuff on the phone and so I can install an ad blocker and not.have to deal with all of that. So now I need to explain to family and friends that Google is to blame, but they don’t care and ask me to install “the normal browser”. Ugh.

Also, I now have to deal with the Google-heads at work using this as an example of how chrome is the superior browser. Double ugh.

If it’s showing at the bottom of the browser, then the browser thinks the link is a regular link, but clicking or copying it may invoke some JavaScript that either manipulates the link or simply redirects to the tracker site after an onClick event. I’d like to see this for my own curiosity. If my thought is correct, then there should be some way to disable that specific method call with uBlock or some other mechanism. I’m curious what happens with a text based browser or screen reader type browser. You could also trace the JavaScript and see what’s happening. If this is really happening with the big social media sites, it’s just a matter of time until a plugin is developed to correct the behavior.

This may be the push I need to migrate to Nextcloud. I’m struggling to identify my use cases, though and am wondering if all I really need is Syncthing.

At home, I was allowed to have alcohol with supper at family meals from about 13.

I feel like the regulations should be to give parents control over their child’s activities if they so choose. While we’re at it, make it illegal to collect information about a person, parent or child, without their express concent. I don’t know how, but there are many smart people in the world that can probably figure it out.

I’m using mandos with the server on a raspberry pi. Unfortunately, mandos doesn’t work with my Fedora boxes as far as I know.

It depends on what you do with Docker. Podman can replace many of the core docker features, but does not ship with a Docker Desktop app (there may be one available). Also, last I checked, there were differences in the docker build command.

That being said, I’m using podman at home and work, doing development things and building images must fine. My final images are built in a pipeline with actual Docker, though.

I jumped ship from Docker (like the metaphor?) when they started clamping down on unregistered users and changed the corporate license. It’s my personal middle finger to them.
